Canada
History of MSI Canada
by Dr Stephen Hoh
Canada is one of the 12 regional centers of MSI Professional Services International.
Compared to some senior MSI regional centers like Singapore, Hong Kong and the US, MSI Canada was just a ‘new kid on the block’ when it officially came into being in January 1999. I was appointed as its first Executive Director.
With the capable leadership of Dr. Po Kee Cheung, Dr. Richard Wong, Dr. Wendy Cheung and brother Poh bin Ng, MSI developed rapidly across Canada. From the beginning, our policy was to keep our overhead to a bare minimum. This was achievable because we served as volunteers. The ministry prospered and within six months, MSI Canada was financially so strong, we did not even have to touch the start up funds sent in by Dr. Taylor and Dr. Reggie Tsang.
In 2002, we registered with the Canadian Government as a charity organization, enabling us to issue tax receipts. That same year Dr. Po Kee Cheung succeeded me as the second Executive Director.
After Po Kee, came Wendy Cheung, Wichai Tumtaweetickul and now Eric Ma as the successive ED’s. Under their leadership, MSI Canada has continued to grow steadily. We have regular prayer, fellowship and vision sharing meetings in Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Edmonton and Vancouver.
In 2013, besides long term workers, we had 30 short and medium term trippers joining 9 different MSI programs in China.
Besides, MSI Canada contributed substantial amounts towards the Sichuan earthquake funds in 2008, and the purchase of the new MSI HQ office in 2010.
People have asked us about the key to the apparent success with MSI Canada. It is not program or strategy, but people. The Lord has blessed us with good people who serve unselfishly, sacrificially and in unity.
May God continue to use us for His glory in the days ahead.
